Strongest Frame
The frame is the backbone of a truck. To that end, the New '09 F-150 took what
was already the strongest frame in its class* and made it even better. The New
'09 F-150 frame has greater utilization of high-strength steel to make it
stronger, lighter and 10 percent stiffer to give you increased capability with
enhanced fuel economy. The fully boxed high-strength steel frame features
through-welded crossmembers and provides excellent static torsional and bending
stiffness, and less overall frame deflection. The front frame rails themselves
are constructed using hydroforming technology, which produces precise frame wall
thickness without the inherent stresses and dimensional variations of stamping
or welding.
*Class is full-size pickups under 8,500 lbs. GVWR.
6" Longer Leaf Springs
The rear leaf springs on the New '09 F-150 are six inches longer than previous
models. They're also attached further forward on the frame. These adjustments
provide better lateral stability and refined steering characteristics. The New
'09 F-150 leaf springs remain three inches wide, the widest in the segment,* to
provide excellent cornering control when turning, especially under heavy loads.
*Class is full-size pickups under 8,500 lbs. GVWR.
Powerful and Efficient
The New '09 F-150 features a three-engine lineup that provides excellent power
and fuel economy. The robust 5.4L 3-valve SOHC V8 is E85 Flex-Fuel-capable and
features Variable Cam Timing (VCT) for enhanced efficiency when hauling heavy
loads. The new 4.6L 3-valve SOHC V8 delivers unsurpassed fuel economy at 21
mpg** and uses Charge Motion Control Valves to increase performance while
reducing emissions. The 4.6L 2-valve V8 features increased horsepower and torque
with the same fuel economy as the base engine it replaces. In fact, across the
engine lineup, the New '09 F-150 provides greater horsepower and torque while
delivering improved fuel economy.
**EPA-estimated 15 city/21 highway mpg, SuperCrew 2WD with SFE package.
Transmission of Power
A new 6-speed automatic transmission with Tow/Haul Mode comes standard with the
4.6L 3-valve SOHC V8 engine and the 5.4L 3-valve SOHC V8 engine. This
electronically controlled close-ratio transmission helps optimize power delivery
for improved fuel economy. A selectable Tow/Haul Mode improves performance when
towing or hauling heavy loads by compensating for altitude, grade and load, and
reducing gear hunting, improving power delivery, and using engine braking to
help slow the truck when descending hills.
Outboard-Mounted Rear Shocks
The New '09 F-150 features outboard-mounted rear shock absorbers. Positioning
the rear shocks outside the frame rails reduces body lean and helps control axle
motion on washboard road surfaces.
Anti-Lock Brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution
Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), used by the standard 4-Wheel
Vented-Disc Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), manages the rear brakes to help ensure
maximum capability under heavy loads. It's proven technology that provides peace
of mind behind the wheel when you need it most.
Electronic Locking Differential
The New '09 F-150 FX4 features a new standard Electronic Locking Rear
Differential that, when engaged, locks the axle completely to provide maximum
traction at both wheels at the same time. Electronic Locking Rear Differential
is fully integrated with the AdvanceTrac® system with segment-exclusive*Roll
Stability Control™ (RSC®)** to give you ultimate control when traveling on- or
off-road.
*Class is full-size pickups under 8,500 lbs. GVWR.
**Remember, even advanced technology cannot overcome the laws of physics. It's
always possible to lose control of a vehicle due to inappropriate driver input
for the conditions.
